Ol Doinyo Lengai — meaning "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language — is one of the most extraordinary and unique volcanoes on Earth. It is the world's only active volcano that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare black lava that turns white upon contact with air and moisture. This gives the volcano's slopes an otherworldly, ash-like appearance.
Located in the Arusha region near Lake Natron, this sacred Maasai mountain rises to 2,962 metres. The trek to the summit is typically done at night to reach the crater rim at sunrise — one of the most dramatic and rewarding experiences in all of East Africa. Combined with a visit to flamingo-filled Lake Natron below, it makes for an unforgettable adventure.
⚠️ Important: This is an active volcano. All treks must be done with an experienced licensed guide from Gies Explorer. We provide full safety equipment and briefing.
